Economy Minister: Dynamics of Producer Price Index in Jan. 2026 Is Comparable to Jan. 2025 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The dynamics of the producer price index in January 2026 is comparable to that in January 2025, with no extraordinary price pressure, outgoing Minister of Economy and Industry Peter Dilov said during a hearing in Parliament on Thursday on the observed significant and unjustified increase in prices of basic goods and services, including food, energy, and other consumer sectors. The data does not indicate any objective macroeconomic preconditions for a sharp and unjustified increase in final consumer prices, as the main input costs do not show a significant upward trend on an annual basis.
Dilov noted that in mid-July 2025, the Ministry of Economy and Industry began monitoring 33 key indicators reflecting the dynamics of the main production factors in the economy. The monitoring is carried out on a weekly basis by comparing both the previous week and the same period of the previous year.
The Minister cited data showing that in January 2026, the price of electricity showed the strongest fluctuations with an increase of over 41% in the second week and 27% in the third week of the month, with a decline of 10% in the first week and 25% in the fifth week. Compared to the beginning of the observation period, which is July 2025, the price remains more than 50% higher.
The price of oil rose from USD 60.7 at the end of 2025 to USD 67.4 at the end of January 2026. However, it is 1.5% lower than at the beginning of the observation period and between USD 5 and 15 per barrel lower than in January 2025.
Gasoline and diesel prices are fluctuating, with prices slightly lower than at the beginning of the observation period – by about 4 and 7% respectively on an annual basis. The price of methane in January was between 2.6 and 6% lower than in the same period last year. Gas on the regulated market recorded a decrease of about 25% compared to January 2025. Gas prices on the unregulated market rose by about 5% compared to the previous month but remained about 30% lower on an annual basis.
Metals saw a moderate increase. The price of aluminium rose by about 4%, copper by 2 to 3%, hot rolled coil steel by about 2%, and steel by less than 1%. Plastics saw a reversal of the upward trend, with polyethylene rising by 2.5% and polyvinyl by about 2%.
The minimum wage increased by 12.6%, and salaries in the public sector rose by 5% from January 1, 2026, leading to higher labour costs, Dilov reported.
There was an increase in the price of palm oil, rapeseed, and wheat. A decline was registered in raw sugar and maize. The price of sunflower seeds saw nearly no change. Compared to last year, there has been a significant increase in the price of sunflower seeds and palm oil, an increase in wheat and rapeseed, and a decrease in soybeans, raw sugar, and maize.
There has been no change in the financial resources available to businesses, with interest rates on loans in euro remaining higher than those in leva. In international transport, the seasonal growth pattern continued in the fourth week of January, with the current growth significantly higher than in 2025.
Dilov cited data for November 2025, which shows a 9.9% increase year-on-year, with an average of 0.3% for the eurozone and the European Union. This had Bulgaria top the ranks with the next country boasting a 5.8% increase. Some of the fastest growing sectors in Bulgaria are information technology services with 24.1%, information activities with 31%, and professional activities and scientific research with 21.2%.
In December 2025, Bulgaria ranked second in the EU with a 7.7% increase in domestic trade turnover compared to the same month in 2024. According to Dilov, the dynamics in retail trade reflect the public’s increased purchasing power, with the price effect eliminated.
