Balgarianovinite.com The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) – Sofia is arranging “The Little Ones” (2025–2026), a new exhibition by Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov, featuring recent works created specifically for the gallery. Solakov, one of the founders of ICA-Sofia, returns to the institution whose establishment was supported by his personal contribution.
“The Little Ones” consists primarily of seven large-scale paintings that form a conceptual series characteristic of Solakov’s practice. The works combine dense pictorial surfaces – dominated by reds, greys, blacks, halftones and sharp color accents – with small silhouetted figures and handwritten texts that describe their emotional or existential states. Each canvas presents a self-contained narrative reflecting everyday human experiences, including frustration, political anxiety, moments of calm, and withdrawal or disappearance as a form of balance.
The exhibition also includes ten drawings arranged in two cycles of paired nude female figures. Executed from life and accompanied by a self-referential text, the drawings form a separate work titled “20 Years”, which connects them conceptually to one of the paintings in the show.
According to exhibition curator Iara Boubnova, the project combines visual storytelling with subtle irony, questioning contemporary social and political realities while addressing escapism as a possible response available to artists.
Nedko Solakov is among Bulgaria’s most internationally recognized contemporary artists. He has participated twice in Documenta and six times in the Venice Biennale. His work has been shown in major museums and biennials worldwide and is held in the collections of institutions such as Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou.
“The Little Ones” will run at ICA–Sofia from February 26 to May 3, 2026.
