Balgarianovinite.com At the National Academy of Art (NAA) there has always been a spirit of freedom, LIK magazine Editor-in-Chief Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov said on Thursday, at the presentation of the February issue, dedicated to the Academy’s 130th anniversary, at the Academia Gallery in Sofia.
According to Lozanov, the NAA means a lot of things, the most important is education, but at the same time the Academy is also a space where art is exhibited. In addition, it is an institution of art history, art studies, criticism, “because art cannot exist without its interpretation”, he said.
Lozanov noted that the Academy also represents, in a sense, a validation of the leading names in Bulgarian fine arts – to pass through its entrance, to become a lecturer, and to teach future generations. According to him, this is one of the highest forms of recognition an artist can receive, and the NAA grants this recognition in a natural way, not through the pathos of awards and celebrations, but by offering a platform to the artist.
He recalled that in 1957 Christo Javacheff left Bulgaria, saying he simply could not make art because he lacked freedom and without freedom, art is impossible.
Lozanov explained that in 1968, the year of the Prague Spring, when Soviet tanks entered Prague to suppress the mass protest for “socialism with a human face”, Academician Todor Pavlov, the leading ideologist of the Bulgarian Communist Party Central Committee, came to the Academy. His task was to discipline the students and tell them that if they truly wanted to create art, they had to follow the political line, otherwise, they would have no chance.
“In fact, it was those who did not follow that line that managed to create genuine art. I am a witness to that. Fortunately, many graduates of the NAA did not heed Todor Pavlov’s words and over the years succeeded in attaining freedom. Let’s hope the Academy preserves the most precious thing it can pass on to generations – freedom,” Lozanov said.
Since January 2024, the BTA’s literature, art and culture periodical has been freely accessible. All LIK issues since its relaunch in 2022 can be downloaded in electronic format from BTA’s website. The February issue, titled “130 Years of Higher Education in Fine Arts” is also available online in Bulgarian.
