Balgarianovinite.com A government aircraft is flying to Abu Dhabi, while another plane chartered by the Bulgarian government is heading to Dubai. The government plane has a capacity of 70 seats, and the aircraft bound for Dubai can carry 320 passengers, said Foreign Ministry’s Situation Centre Directorate Director Irena Dimitrova, at a briefing of the crisis taskforce on Wednesday following the tensions in the Middle East. Both planes are expected to land at 6:00 p.m. local time.
“The information has already been distributed to the people on the list. We are also processing a third list, as there is a possibility of a Bulgaria Air flight from Salalah to Dubai tomorrow [Thursday], provided that airspace is open and the necessary permits are granted,” she added.
Regarding Oman, where there is the most severe congestion of aircraft and a large group of Bulgarian citizens in need of assistance, Dimitrova said that they are expected to return to Bulgaria on a scheduled Bulgaria Air flight from Salalah on March 5. Another seven people are leaving Oman on individual routes with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she explained. She also noted that one Bulgarian citizen currently in Muscat has been included in a flight organized by Italy under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
As for Qatar, 310 people still remain to be evacuated and the evacuation list is ready, Dimitrova added. According to her, it is not realistic for Doha airport to reopen in the coming days. “It may be necessary to organize an overland operation from Doha to the border with Saudi Arabia and then a flight from Riyadh. According to the information available at this stage, the airport there is operating and open for civilian flights,” she said.
“From Jordan, we have assisted tour operators with the evacuation of 130 Bulgarian citizens, of whom 57 have already returned to Bulgaria and 46 will travel along the same route on March 5. The remaining citizens are independent tourists who already have tickets and are expected to arrive in Bulgaria in the coming days,” Dimitrova added.
“From Iraq, today at 2:00 p.m., we managed to assist five Bulgarian nationals to return via the land border with Turkiye. We are maintaining constant contact with them and providing guidance,” she said.
“In addition, a flight crew of 13 people was evacuated through the Turkish border, and we are currently arranging the evacuation of one more Bulgarian citizen, the last remaining in Iraq, via the border with Jordan,” Dimitrova noted.
Concerning Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, Dimitrova said that the EU Cooperation Mechanism had been activated and that 30 seats had been secured for Bulgarian citizens on an evacuation flight from Riyadh to Vienna, Austria. Of these, 25 seats are for people in Bahrain and five for those in Saudi Arabia.
“In Kuwait, airspace is currently closed and the civilian airport is not operating. We have 10 tourists who have requested evacuation, and the embassy on the ground is assisting them,” Dimitrova added.
“Overall, assistance is currently being provided for the evacuation of 320 Bulgarian citizens – 91 from Abu Dhabi and 103 from Salalah,” Dimitrova said. “We are trying to gather 180 people from Salalah for a second Bulgaria Air flight,” she added. A further 30 people will be evacuated on a flight organized by Austria, while one Bulgarian citizen is being evacuated on a flight organized by Italy.
“We also have a list of fewer than 40 Bulgarian citizens currently stranded in Iran. We are in contact with them, but so far no requests for assistance with evacuation to Bulgaria have been received,” Dimitrova said.
