Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov took part in the second Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris on Tuesday, Traikov’s Ministry said. He was part of the Bulgarian delegation led by caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov.
Traikov participated in a ministerial meeting of the European Nuclear Alliance. The event brought together ministers and representatives from European Union Member States who support the development of nuclear energy as an important element of the energy transition, energy security, and efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The meeting focused on the current geopolitical situation and the impact of the Middle East crisis on energy markets, as well as topics related to progress in the inclusion and recognition of nuclear energy as a legitimate tool in EU climate, energy, and industrial policies, and the preparation of a new declaration by the Alliance.
In his remarks on the consequences of the Middle East crisis for energy markets, Traikov noted that Bulgaria is closely monitoring the development of the situation and its potential impact on global energy supplies and commodity prices. He pointed out the risks of a long-term blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s crude oil supplies pass, which is already putting significant pressure on international markets and driving up prices.
“Nuclear energy plays a key role as a stable, low-carbon baseload source of electricity, not only for power generation but also for heat and hydrogen production,” Traikov said. “Its role in Bulgaria’s energy mix is proven, and we are consistently developing this potential with the project for the 7th and 8th units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. Our task at the community level is for it to be recognized as an equal component of the European energy mix, alongside renewables, in achieving the EU’s climate goals by 2050,” he added.
The European Nuclear Alliance was established in 2023 on the initiative of France, aiming to support the role of nuclear energy in achieving the EU’s decarbonization, energy security, and competitiveness goals. Bulgaria is among the founding members of the initiative, together with countries such as Czechia, Poland, Romania, Finland, and Slovakia.
During the forum, Traikov held a bilateral meeting with Turkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar and invited him to visit Sofia.
The Bulgarian minister also held talks with his Romanian counterpart, Bogdan-Gruia Ivan. The two discussed the possibility of submitting a joint application for grant funding for a pre-feasibility study for the Nikopol-Turnu Magurele hydropower complex.
Traikov also spoke with France’s Energy Minister Maud Bregeon and took part in a joint meeting of caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov with Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko.
