Balgarianovinite.com More than 50 students and guests took part in organizing and staging the 26th Festival of Japanese Culture at the University of Veliko Tarnovo, held in the Medieval Bulgarian capital on Saturday. Numerous themed corners were arranged in the university’s ceremonial hall and foyer, while the stage programme included demonstrations, presentations, songs, and dances. This year sushi was also offered, and for the first time it was prepared not by students but by professional chefs from a local sushi restaurant.
Official guests at the opening of the event included the new Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria, Chikahisa Sumi, and his wife, the country’s cultural attache Kento Muraki, and the Dean of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Veliko Tarnovo, Assoc. Prof. Polina Tsoncheva, said Militsa Mineva, a lecturer in Japanese at the University, in remarks to BTA.
Mineva said this is the oldest Festival of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria. It is organized by Japanese studies students from all academic years, who come up with their own dances and songs and make origami. “We now also invite guests who offer various anime goods, food, and drinks,” explained Mineva, who is part of the University’s first graduating class in the “Applied Linguistics with Japanese” programme.
She said the festival began as an initiative by local Japanese language lecturers and students with the support of volunteers from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Today, similar festivals are also organized at Sofia University and schools teaching Japanese in Sofia and Ruse.
