Balgarianovinite.com At the start of Wednesday’s plenary sitting, the Vazrazhdane party called in a declaration for the National Assembly of Bulgaria to formulate Bulgaria’s position on carbon emissions trading ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting on March 19, 2026. Speaking from the parliamentary rostrum, MP Iskra Mihaylova said the country was facing a second opportunity to defend its energy capabilities.
Mihaylova requested a 30-minute recess so that the parliamentary Energy Committee of the National Assembly could convene and review a draft decision submitted by Vazrazhdane. The proposal would oblige the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria to declare a position supporting the temporary suspension of the EU Emissions Trading System.
“This is a key and critical moment for the Republic of Bulgaria, for our energy sector and for the country’s economy,” Mihaylova said.
She argued that when the European Green Deal was adopted in 2019, Bulgaria failed to take advantage of the capacity mechanism that could have helped preserve its coal-based energy sector. According to her, the government led at the time by GERB made a major mistake that others have been trying to correct for years.
Mihaylova said that the current geopolitical environment provides an opportunity to revisit the issue and added that ten European countries have already called for a review of carbon emissions markets.
She argued that the European Union has effectively imposed what she described as a “tax on air” on the European economy, with carbon prices ranging over the past five years between 65 and 105 euro per tonne of emissions. By contrast, major global economies, including China, United States, India, Russia and Japan, either do not impose such taxes or apply them at significantly lower levels, around 9 to 10 euro, which she said undermines the competitiveness of the European economy.
Earlier in the day, parliament rejected another proposal by Vazrazhdane to include on the agenda a draft decision obliging the government to take steps to preserve jobs, coal mining and electricity production in the state-owned Maritsa East energy complex.
