Balgarianovinite.com A collection titled, 26. A Brief Anthology of Contemporary Bulgarian Authors in the United Kingdom, compiled by literary critic Georgi N. Nikolov, was presented on Wednesday at the Petko and Pencho Slaveykov House Museum in Sofia, which is part of the National Literary Museum.
Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director-General Kiril Valchev highlighted the agency’s dual role in promoting Bulgarian literature and connecting Bulgarians abroad. He said that Pencho Slaveykov, a prominent poet of the turn of the 20th century, spent much of his life abroad, yet his work remains deeply connected to Bulgaria. The presentation of Georgi Nikolov’s new book, 26. A Brief Anthology of Contemporary Bulgarian Authors in the United Kingdom, took place at the National Literary Museum in Sofia, in the emblematic Slaveykov family home, Valchev said. “The Slaveykov house is a natural place for BTA,” he said.
Valchev noted that last year BTA’s special section on Bulgarians worldwide published over 9,000 pieces of information, up from 246 in 2021, reflecting the growing link between the diaspora and the homeland.
Attending the event were directors from the National Literary Museum and the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, along with poets and writers involved in the Bulgarian literary community in the UK. Atanas Kapralov, director of the museum, praised Nikolov for making Bulgarians aware of authors living across the globe. Kapralov said: “Wherever there is a Bulgarian, there is Bulgaria.” Rayna Mandzhukova, director of the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, stressed the enduring value of the printed book: “I am deeply convinced that the paper book will not die… the fact that young people still choose books shows their lasting significance.”
Literary critic Dimana Ivanova described the anthology as combining prose and poetry, reflecting the authors’ roots in Bulgaria while exploring global literary currents of the 20th century. The contributors come from diverse professional backgrounds, such as writer and politician Yuliyan Popov, illustrating the wide range of experiences represented in the anthology. The event concluded with actor Stoyan Chobanov performing excerpts from the book, celebrating the ongoing connection between Bulgarian authors abroad and their homeland.
