Vassilev said the government should quickly draft and submit a package to Parliament aimed at tackling inflation. The focus should be less on fuel prices than on electricity costs for businesses, which are currently the main driver of inflation.
He said that a price cap, in place since the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022, had ensured that businesses received compensation, preventing increases in electricity bills and, by extension, in the prices of goods and services they offer. Since October 2025, this cap has effectively disappeared, and businesses are now paying electricity bills that are two to three times higher, which automatically feeds into the prices of goods, he said.
Vassilev said that with oil now over USD 100 per barrel, gas prices are rising as well. “Since neighbouring Greece generates 40% of its electricity from natural gas and we share a common market, this will automatically push up electricity prices for businesses. This is where the main inflationary pressure will come from – not from fuels, but from electricity costs for the Bulgarian economy,” he said.
Ahead of the April 19 snap parliamentary elections, Vassilev stressed the role of the Interior Ministry in preventing vote buying.
