Balgarianovinite.com The sudden drop in gold prices following the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East has in recent days triggered a buying frenzy for bars and gold items in Turkiye. Jewellery, bars, coins – anything goes, as long as it is gold!
In Istanbul, thousands of citizens, taking advantage of the decline in the price of gold, flock to Kuyumcukent (the City of Jewellers) – a huge jewellery complex in the Turkish metropolis. Today the complex houses over 2500 companies and unites all processes in the jewellery industry, from production to retail, under one roof.
Due to high demand, gold items, particularly 1 gramme 24-carat bars and 1.75 gramme 22-carat coins, are nearly sold out, according to the Ihlas News Agency (IHA). Long queues formed outside jewellery shops at Istanbul’s historic Grand Bazaar. The counters of many jewellery shops have been emptied.
Since the beginning of March, after the strikes by Israel and the US against Iran, sales of gold and gold items, especially 22-carat pieces, have increased sevenfold in Turkiye.
Online gold sales have risen 12.5-fold since March 23, with the highest demand for 22-carat bracelets. Price fluctuations, particularly during periods of decline, have led to a remarkable increase in gold purchases through digital platforms, reports T24.
Turks traditionally regard gold as the safest investment, particularly in times of instability such as the present.
24-carat pure gold bars and 1 gramme gold bars, which are certified and meet international standards, are seen as the most reliable investment because there are no processing costs and the difference between the sale and purchase price is minimal.
Due to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, caused by the strikes of Israel and the US against Iran, gold prices in Turkiye fell below TRY 6,000 (EUR 117) per gramme. They have begun to recover and, as of March 26, have risen above TRY 6,500 (EUR 127), according to Referansturk.
