Balgarianovinite.com The next parliament must prioritize reform of the healthcare system, Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader Krum Zarkov said at the official launch of the BSP-United Left coalition’s campaign in Varna, on the Black Sea, on Thursday.
He warned of worsening access to healthcare, noting that Pazardzhik is already without a municipal hospital and that the paediatric surgery unit at St. Anna Hospital in Varna has been closed. Without systemic changes, he said, Bulgarians risk being able to receive treatment only if they can afford to pay for it.
List leader for Varna Dr Desislav Taskov said hospitals should not operate as commercial entities, arguing that healthcare is not a commodity. At least State and municipal hospitals should have a different legal status, he added, calling for new rules to ensure a level playing field between the public and private sectors.
On fuel prices, Zarkov said action is needed before a full-scale crisis unfolds. He called for Parliament to be convened to adopt legislative measures, including reducing taxes and excise duties on fuels. According to him, Parliament has the authority to introduce such temporary measures to ease the burden on consumers, noting that similar steps have already been taken in countries such as Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece.
