Balgarianovinite.com In a video published on his Facebook page on Saturday night, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov reported that the government is introducing a comprehensive package of measures to halt the rise in prices for Bulgarian consumers caused by the military conflict in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister said that the government’s task is to ensure that this external pressure has as little impact as possible on the lives of the Bulgarian people, which is why the cabinet is starting with the most important sector: transportation. “That is where the rise in fuel prices is felt most acutely, and if we do not act, it will directly affect everything else – from travel to food and goods,” Gurov said
Gurov added: “That is why we decided to postpone the introduction of tolls by a few months, which means EUR 30 million less in costs for transporters – money that would otherwise have gone directly into prices. This measure applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: large trucks, agricultural machinery, and even small vans that deliver food to people.” He reported that negotiations have been launched with the European Commission for an additional EUR 50 million in support for the transport sector.
Gurov pointed to food as another priority. “We want people to have access to Bulgarian fruits and vegetables. That is why we are supporting farmers, reducing the excise tax on fuel, and paying out their subsidies early, so they can produce more and do so now, when it matters most,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that one of the most effective anti-inflation measures concerns electricity prices for businesses. To tackle high prices, compensation mechanisms will be in place to ensure that businesses do not pass on the costs to consumers. “This applies to everyone in the industry, from small businesses to hair salons, nail salons, hospitals, schools, and kindergartens,” the Prime Minister noted.
After introducing a EUR 20 compensation payment related to rising fuel prices, the cabinet plans to create 15,000 jobs for young people and the long-term unemployed. Gurov added: “We are also preparing a regulation on energy poverty as early as next week. We are working to reduce product taxes that drive up the prices of home appliances and electronics.”
Gurov continued: “We have already subsidized public transportation with EUR 50 million. We will also support intercity transportation in remote and hard-to-reach areas. There will also be special support for school buses.”
The Prime Minister specified that the National Revenue Agency, Commission for Consumer Protection, and the National Statistical Institute will work to make sure that these measures are effective. A special task force for price stability will be set up to monitor whether the measures are yielding results, whether new ones are needed, or whether some should be dropped.
