Former Vice President Kamala Harris shocked Jon Stewart when she declared that former President Joe Biden was “fully competent” to serve another four years.

Harris joined Stewart for his Thursday episode of The Weekly Show podcast where she promoted her book 107 Days and opened up about her “complicated” relationship with Biden.

During their conversation, Stewart asked Harris whether her “loyalty” to the then-president during the 2024 election prevented her from more “robustly” distinguishing herself from him and his policies.

“I care about him deeply and I did not want to pile on with all the criticism that he was facing. I didn’t think it was necessary,” Harris said, going on to say she miscalculated how much voters wanted her to differentiate herself from Biden.

The former vice president said she still speaks to Biden and they are on good terms, but she later described their relationship during the election as “complicated.”

When Stewart clarified that his question was based more on policies more than “competence” and Harris declared she believes Biden was “fully competent” and ready to serve another four years. The former president is currently 82.

“I believe he was fully competent to serve,” Harris said.

“Do you really?” a shocked Stewart asked.

“I do,” Harris said.

“That surprises me, actually,” Stewart responded.

Harris argued there is a major “distinction” between running for president and serving as president.

“Being a candidate for President of the United States is about being in a marathon at a sprinter’s pace, having tomatoes thrown at you every step you take,” she said.

“I think it’s a hard case to make for people that he didn’t have the stamina to run, but he had the stamina to govern because I think most people view the presidency as a marathon run at a sprint with tomatoes being thrown at you in terms of governance,” Stewart argued.

Check out the exchange below:

JON STEWART: I don’t mean that in the personal sense of not ready. I meant it more in the sense of the policies that he wanted to implement or the way that they were implemented or the governance obstacles more than the competence conversation.

KAMALA HARRIS: No, I’m not talking about competence. I am not talking about competence at all. No, I believe he was fully competent to serve.

STEWART: Do you really?

HARRIS: I do.

STEWART: That surprises me, actually.

HARRIS: No, I do, but there’s a distinction to be made between running for president and being president.

STEWART: What’s the distinction?

HARRIS: Being a candidate for President of the United States is about being in a marathon at a sprinter’s pace, having tomatoes thrown at you every step you take.

STEWART: That sounds lovely!

HARRIS: Yeah, it’s more than an ocean.

STEWART: Get involved in public service, ladies and gentlemen!

HARRIS: And to be the seated president, the sitting president, while doing that, it’s a lot. It’s a lot.

STEWART: I think it’s a hard case to make for people that he didn’t have the stamina to run, but he had the stamina to govern because I think most people view the presidency as a marathon run at a sprint with tomatoes being thrown at you in terms of governance. And, again, I recognize the incredibly difficult place you are in with that with personal relationships.
