The 1st Gifts of Thrace Regional Agricultural Exhibition was officially unveiled at the Arapovo Monastery near Asenovgrad on Saturday. It brings together over 40 producers from Plovdiv Region’s 18 municipalities to showcase the best local products, traditions, and innovations until October 11.
The exhibition was unveiled by President Iliana Iotova. In her speech, she said the Bulgarian countryside must be preserved. “Unfortunately, the statistics point in exactly the opposite direction. I hope that today there are wise and sensible politicians, true patriots, who will close this grim chapter once and for all – a chapter in which, every day, another Bulgarian village disappears and shuts its doors,” said Iotova. In her words, a national programme is needed to save the Bulgarian countryside. Bulgaria must take a firm stance on preserving agricultural programmes and ensuring even greater development and even faster and easier access to them. “Because when our food supply is secure, many other difficult issues are easily resolved. And for Bulgaria to be strong, it must be secure. Food must be accessible to every Bulgarian. When our traditions are strong, we are strong as Bulgarians,” the President said.
The programme features demonstrations of traditional food-making, free workshops for children, folk dance and music performances. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the authentic flavours of the region: genuine aged cheese, artisanal meat appetizers, pure honey, homemade preserves, monastery specialties, and premium Thracian wines.
The exhibition’s programme began in Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria) on Friday with a discussion forum on “The Future of Bulgarian Agriculture: Policies, Competitiveness and Sustainability.”
The event is organized under the auspices of the Plovdiv Regional Governor and with the support of the Plovdiv Regional Administration.
