President Iliana Iotova met Slovak President Peter Pellegrini on Tuesday on the sidelines of the general debate at the UN General Assembly’s 81st session, the President’s press secretariat said.
The two discussed the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028 to 2034, calling for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy to be preserved because they support less developed EU member states.
Bulgaria and Slovakia belong to the EU’s Friends of Cohesion group.
Developing transport and energy links in Southeastern Europe was another priority for both presidents.
Iotova and Pellegrini rejected a multi-speed EU dominated by larger member states, the press secretariat added. They noted the lack of an adequate collective European response to rising fuel prices, with each country responding independently.
The talks also focused on Europe’s absence from negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, the press secretariat said. Iotova reiterated that the EU, which is directly affected by the conflict, should take an active role and initiate peace talks.
