Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said here on Wednesday that Germany is a key partner for Bulgaria, and that the bilateral ties are of strategic importance, as evidenced by the fact that Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s first visit abroad was to Berlin. Petrova was speaking at a joint news conference with her German counterpart Johann Wadephul within her working visit to Germany.
Minister Petrova began her remarks in German, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome she had received in the country and underscoring that the good political relations between Germany and Bulgaria serve as a solid foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation.
She highlighted the great potential of the existing economic partnership between Bulgaria and Germany, specifically in the fields of defence, infrastructure, energy, innovation, and science.
Minister Petrova stressed that Europe must overcome its economic dependencies, which means finding alternative energy sources as well as secure routes for them to reach Europe. In her view, Bulgaria and Germany can do more to improve transportation connectivity, and Bulgaria has real advantages given its geographical location.
She noted that next year Bulgaria will host a regional summit in close coordination with the European Commission. “We will bring together political, financial, and business leaders, as well as European institutions, around a shared vision for sustainable connectivity between Europe and Asia. “The goal is clear – political ambitions will lead to concrete projects and actual funding that will diversify Europe’s energy supplies and help it overcome its dependencies,” underscored Petrova.
On September 16, in her State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the launch of a new international connectivity project, which will be discussed at a regional summit together with Bulgarian Prime Minister Radev.
