Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has detected excessive levels of pesticide residues in a consignment of 720 kg of packaged tea imported from China via the Port of Varna, the BFSA press service reported on Friday. The consignment comprises 520 kg of black tea and 200 kg of oolong tea and was intended for sale on the European Union market.
Upon importation of the tea at the Port of Varna, an identification check and a physical inspection were carried out, during which samples were taken for laboratory analysis at an accredited specialist laboratory in Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria. The analysis revealed the presence of three pesticides that are not authorized for use, as well as five authorized pesticides in quantities exceeding the maximum permissible levels set out in European food safety legislation.
The non-compliance found means the consignment cannot be placed on the market. The tea is due to be destroyed.
