Balgarianovinite.com Public sector employees staged a protest in the Greek capital Athens on Wednesday, demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Demonstrators gathered at Klafthmonos Square before marching along central boulevards toward the building of Parliament.
Public transportation in Athens was not disrupted during the protest.
“With the strike, workers are fighting against the prevailing policies leading to impoverishment. They oppose the policies implemented by the ruling majority, which benefit only a few rather than the majority of people,” the country’s largest public sector trade union organization said in a statement cited by local media.
Protesters in Athens carried banners calling for the restoration of the 13th and 14th monthly salaries in the public sector, which were abolished during Greece’s financial crisis.
The online edition of the newspaper Kathimerini reported that teachers, local government employees, tax office workers, and healthcare staff across the country joined the 24-hour nationwide strike, which is focused primarily on economic demands.
The unions’ key demands include salary increases, measures to address the rising cost of living, improved workplace health and safety conditions, and the permanent hiring of employees currently working under temporary contracts, particularly in the healthcare, education, and social security sectors.
