President Donald Trump was attacked by critics — and at least one supporter — after he literally rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
Trump met Xi on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, which, as CNN’s Kaitlan Collins noted, was the first time a U.S. president has done so for a world leader, minus the pope, since 1962.
The Chinese president’s three-day trip also marks the first state visit to Washington in more than a decade. On Thursday, Trump will host a state dinner for Xi, with major artificial intelligence tycoons in attendance. He’s also promised to speak with China about his war in Iran, attempting to cap its involvement.
At Joint Base Andrews, though, the president went all out. Uniformed U.S. military personnel unfurled the carpet beside Xi’s Air China 747, at times getting on their hands and knees to make further adjustments. Trump, joined by First Lady Melania Trump, then walked to the foot of the plane’s stairs to personally greet Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan.
And these scenes come just hours after a stunning development involving China and the U.S. military. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that the Chinese government had taken potentially sensitive F-35 parts that were mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong while being shipped from Australia to the United States — and had yet to return them.
Unsurprisingly, the elaborate welcome quickly drew scrutiny online, with many critics echoing MeidasTouch co-founder Ben Meiselas, who summed up his reaction in two words: “Utterly humiliating.”
Trump did have at least one critic from his own side, though — his unofficial adviser Laura Loomer.
A snippet of her angry rant read, “A red carpet for a communist dictator who is giving satellite imagery to Iran to target and kill American service members fighting in the war with Iran… [who] helped the Democrats steal the election from President Trump in 2020, by President Trump’s own admission.”
