Balgarianovinite.com Romania’s Foreign Ministry described here on Friday the drone incident in the city of Galați, in which two people were injured, as a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation.
The Ministry says Romania will take diplomatic measures in response to what it describes as a serious violation of international law and its airspace, while informing NATO allies and requesting accelerated support for counter-drone capabilities.
A drone crashed onto the roof of a 10-storey apartment building in the southeastern city of Galati during a Russian overnight attack on neighbouring Ukraine on Friday. The explosion caused a fire that injured two people, Romanian authorities said, as quoted by Reuters.
Romanian authorities say movement in the Galati area has been restricted, while the two injured people, who suffered minor injuries, have been taken to hospital.
Two other individuals experienced panic attacks and received assistance at the scene, according to the Ministry of National Defence.
Officials outlined that radar systems detected drones flying near Romanian airspace during the night.
Two F-16 fighter jets from the Air Policing Service were scrambled from the 86th Air Base Fetesti, supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter of the Romanian Air Force. Pilots were authorized to engage targets.
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations coordinated warning measures, including RO-Alert messages sent to residents in Tulcea, Galați and Braila counties.
Asked why the drone that crashed into a residential building in central Galați was not shot down, defence ministry spokesperson Cristian Popovici said Romania “cannot risk creating more threats than it can prevent,” adding that the military operates under strict engagement limits.
Head of the Department for Emergency Situations Raed Arafat said residents were warned minutes before the impact. He confirmed there were no fatalities, while the fire affected an apartment and caused damage to two stairwells, a lift shaft and five vehicles.
Galați Mayor Ionuț Pucheanu said Romania must adapt its approach and improve preparedness, noting that shelters exist but are not sufficient for the city’s population.
Romanian defence officials say fragments of drones have been identified on Romanian territory in 47 cases since the start of the war in Ukraine, including 12 cases this year alone.
