Balgarianovinite.com Vegas Culture Director Dimitris Arvanitis described the Ivan Vazov National Theatre’s first participation in the Athens Epidaurus Festival as a historic moment. Vegas Culture co-produced Euripides’ The Bacchae, directed by Javor Gardev, which premiered at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on July 10 and 11.
Arvanitis was speaking Monday at a press conference at BTA’s National Press Club in Athens, where information was presented about the Bulgarian National Theatre’s summer tour of Greece.
“The National Theatre’s participation in the Epidaurus Festival benefits both countries,” Arvanitis said.
He noted that while there have always been classical stagings of The Bacchae, he believes this interpretation is entirely different because it incorporates live music by a renowned band that has been present on the international music scene for many years, linking its music with the play.
Arvanitis said the undertaking had been challenging because it required coordination between institutions in two countries, while the project’s participants came from five different countries. The fact that the project has reached a successful conclusion is, in his words, “a major achievement for everyone involved”.
According to the co-producer, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre’s first participation in the Epidaurus Festival is “a historic moment”, as the venue has previously hosted productions by prominent European theatres.
“The most rewarding moment came on Saturday evening, when thousands of people gave a five-minute standing ovation,” Arvanitis said, adding that everyone involved in the project deserved the highest praise.
He congratulated the production’s director, Javor Gardev, and the cast, drawing particular attention to three Bulgarian actresses from the new generation of Bulgarian theatre performers: Kremena Slavcheva, Alexandra Svilenova and Nadya Keranova.
Arvanitis said he was extremely satisfied and very happy. “I hope we will be back in Epidaurus next year,” said the Greek producer, who also speaks Bulgarian.
The Bacchae is a co-production of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia and the National Theatre of Northern Greece. The performance features Bulgarian and Greek actors, and the music is performed live by the British band The Tiger Lillies. The Bacchae, Euripides’ last surviving tragedy, tells the story of the god Dionysus’ return to Thebes and his conflict with King Pentheus.
