Balgarianovinite.com The Ministry of Justice said Friday that the assessments made by the European Commission (EC) in its Seventh Rule of Law Report are objective and reflect developments during the periods covered by the monitoring process.
Earlier in the day, the EC presented 2026 Rule of Law Report on the European Union, which also includes Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. According to the Commission, the report notes continued positive developments and steady progress across many EU Member States, with significant reforms completed or underway in all areas covered by the assessment.
In a press release, the Justice Ministry said the positive findings for Bulgaria are linked to the efforts of the current government and parliament. Progress has been recognized in key rule of law reforms, including improvements to the mechanism for investigating the Prosecutor General, the new model of the anti-corruption commission, and mandatory judicial review of decisions to terminate or suspend corruption-related investigations.
The ministry noted that the EC had assessed as fully implemented last year’s recommendation concerning the improved functioning of the Inspectorate with the Supreme Judicial Council and the avoidance of risks of political influence over the body.
“Bulgaria has taken important legislative steps to strengthen the independence, accountability and efficiency of the judiciary. We are currently at the stage of implementing the adopted legislation in practice and completing reforms related to the governance of the judicial system,” Justice Minister Nikolay Naydenov was quoted as saying by the ministry’s press office.
“We view the European Commission’s recommendations as a basis for continuing the reforms. The government will maintain an active dialogue with the European Commission, the Council of Europe, civil society and professional organizations in implementing the recommendations,” the Minister added.
The Ministry also said that, when presenting the report on Bulgaria, European Commissioner Michael McGrath cited the country as a positive example, noting the adopted reform aimed at preventing political influence within the Supreme Judicial Council.
