Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova attended the unveiling of a monument to Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski in Targovishte, Northeastern Bulgaria, on Friday. Addressing residents and guests of the town, she said that, 189 years after his birth, the Apostle of Freedom continues to bring Bulgarians together, unite them and inspire them.
The ceremony, held in Targovishte’s Independence Square, brought together representatives of the national and local authorities, the clergy, civic organizations, cultural figures, donors, the media and local residents. A military ceremony was performed by officers and cadets from the Vasil Levski National Military University in Veliko Tarnovo, accompanied by the University’s Military Brass Band. The unveiling of the monument also marked the 189th anniversary of Levski’s birth.
The monument was commissioned on the initiative of the Rotary Club of Targovishte and financed through the organization’s charity balls and donations from members of the public. It was erected in the northeastern part of Independence Square, one of the city’s principal public spaces, following a decision by the Targovishte Municipal Council. The monument was designed by sculptor Iliya Ivanov and architect Vichka Stoyanova.
“Despite the yoke and oppression, Vasil Levski was free in his heart and soul. He was a free man,” Iotova said. She added: “Every artist in Bulgaria today who creates his likeness knows they are creating a monument not only to a face or to a man, but to a belief, just as the Apostle envisioned Bulgaria one day – as a temple of freedom and equality. A temple where there will be fraternity, equality and equal rights, as he himself said, among all the peoples living on Bulgarian soil.”
According to Iotova, the most important lesson Levski left to future generations is that nothing can be achieved without unity. “If we stand united, whatever obstacle lies before us and whatever difficulty we encounter, it will not be easy, but we will overcome it in the name of Bulgaria and our homeland,” she said.
