Balgarianovinite.com Vidin (on the Danube) is among the cities with the largest number of figures connected with the life, work and study of Pencho Slaveykov, providing an opportunity for a more in-depth discussion of his place in Bulgarian modernism, literary scholar Yordan Eftimov said at the opening of the 20th discussion under the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) “Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism” initiative, held at the BTA National Press Club in the city on Monday. It was part of a nationwide series of discussions held at all 33 of BTA’s national press clubs, with the conclusions to be brought together in a special December issue of LIK magazine.
According to Eftimov, unlike other cities where the links with Slaveykov are mainly through the education system, in Vidin it is possible to trace genuine biographical and creative intersections with figures such as Angel Todorov, Nikola Petrov, Mihalaki Georgiev and Pantaley Zarev.
Poet Diana Sirakova presented Pencho Slaveykov as the ideologue of Bulgarian modernism and individualism, called upon to express “the soul of his people”. She traced the literary polemics between the modernists and their opponents at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, noting that Slaveykov’s philosophical poetry continues to find readers among young people.
Journalist and Bulgarian language and literature teacher Vanya Mineva focused on Slaveykov’s place in contemporary education. She said that despite the reduction in the number of compulsory works in school curricula, his writings remain among the key texts through which students are introduced to Bulgarian modernism. She stressed the importance of aesthetic individualism as the guiding principle of his work.
Galina Stoyanova of the Mihalaki Georgiev Regional Library spoke about the contribution of Vidin poet, translator and literary critic Angel Todorov. She recalled that Todorov was among the chief editors of the eight-volume edition of Pencho Slaveykov’s Collected Works (1958-1959), as well as the author of studies that continue to serve as valuable reference material for literary scholars, teachers and students.
Polina Petrova of the Vidin Regional History Museum presented the role of artist Nikola Petrov in the anthology On the Island of the Blessed. According to her, his portraits of the fictional poets, created from photographs by Pencho Slaveykov, turned the publication into a unique synthesis of literature and visual art and remain among the most striking manifestations of Bulgarian modernism.
Tour guide and history teacher Valya Alexandrova stressed that literature, history and cultural heritage should be viewed as complementary. In her view, young people can be drawn to classical literature through a contemporary approach and educational routes tracing the lives and works of Bulgarian authors. As an example, she pointed to the possibility of creating a thematic route covering places in Italy associated with Pencho Slaveykov.
Students also took part in the discussion. Laura Milchova from the Yordan Radichkov Foreign Language High School in Vidin said that although Pencho Slaveykov’s philosophical works are difficult for her generation to grasp, their ideas remain relevant. According to her, the works devoted to love, moral values and the strength of the human spirit are more accessible to young readers and encourage them not to give up because of the unfamiliar language.
During the discussion, Associate Professor Yordan Eftimov noted that one of the aims of BTA’s initiative is for anniversary years to serve not as an occasion for formal celebration, but as an opportunity for discussions that place classical authors in a contemporary cultural and social context.
