Balgarianovinite.com Romania’s military has resumed an operation to carry out a controlled demolition of the Prajoaia rock formation in order to divert more water from the Danube to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), local news media reported.
After an initial attempt to completely destroy the rock formation on Sunday proved unsuccessful, teams from the Ministry of National Defence used a double explosive charge of 100 kilograms and succeeded in demolishing the rock located near the Bala branch of the Danube.
The objective is to create a barrier in the Bala branch, forcing a greater volume of water to flow through the Old Danube channel. Two barges and a heavy-duty crane have been deployed to remove the rock debris.
The operation comes as the Danube’s flow rate at Romania’s entry point could fall to 1,400 cubic metres per second, a level close to a historic low of 1985.
Under the current conditions, the Cernavoda NPP can continue operating normally for only another four to five days before restrictions may become necessary, the Director General of the National Water Administration, Sorin Rindasu, warned on Sunday, as quoted by Agerpres.
At 12:00 local time on Monday, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and major industrial consumers will hold an emergency meeting to discuss voluntary reductions in electricity consumption. Companies will be asked to shift part of their production to off-peak hours to ease pressure on the power grid and help prevent potential power outages.
On Friday, Romania declared a nationwide state of heightened alert in the energy sector for the entire month of August. Outgoing caretaker Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said that, due to the worsening situation, Romania would import electricity from Ukraine and was holding similar discussions with Bulgaria and Greece regarding evening electricity supplies. He also urged citizens and businesses to voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption during the evening hours.
