Balgarianovinite.com There is no risk of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) suspending operations because of the low water level of the Danube River, Energy Minister Iva Petrova said here Tuesday.
Petrova thanked the plant’s Executive Director, Ivan Andreev, for the measures taken and his professional handling of the situation.
The Energy Minister was accompanied by experts from her Ministry and representatives of the management of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) and the Electricity System Operator (ESO).
The Minister reported: “We came here because of the emergency situation caused by the record-low water levels of the Danube River, which have already caused problems in Hungary and Romania. I can confirm that the water levels are at record lows. We have not seen levels like this in years. The lowest levels were recorded in 2003, but even then, they did not reach the current levels.” She emphasized that all necessary measures have been taken at the power plant to ensure safe operation in accordance with the production schedule.
Petrova said that if the current trend of declining water levels in the Danube persists, maintaining the same relative calm in the coming weeks will be possible, but it will require constant monitoring and sustained efforts.
The Ministry of Energy has established contact with institutions in Serbia and Romania to seek cooperation. “We are also receiving support from the Ministry of Environment and Water, as well as from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to utilize all opportunities within the framework of international agreements on the management of the Danube River’s waters,” Petrova added.
She noted that ESO Executive Director Kiril Georgiev reported that there is no risk to the power system at the moment. “Even if stricter measures need to be taken, the Electricity System Operator is prepared and has developed contingency plans. There is no cause for concern,” the Minister added.
Bulgaria is currently assisting other countries and is a net exporter of electricity. Requests from Romania amount to about 3,500 megawatts, while Hungary is requesting between 4,000 and 5,000 megawatts per day.
Ivan Andreev, Executive Director of the Kozloduy NPP, reported that the power plant is operating according to schedule. There has been no change in the units’ output, and the electrical output depends solely on the temperature of the cooling water. The river level is being monitored constantly, and technical measures have been taken regarding the operation of the pumps at the shore pumping station and the circulation pumping station, respectively, to ensure the necessary balance without causing any problems with the pumps’ operation.
Andreev added that while the drop in the river on Tuesday was minimal, upstream, near Austria, the level already rose by about 10 cm.
The exceptionally low level of the Danube River, caused by prolonged drought, has raised concerns about a potential energy crisis in several Balkan countries. In Bulgaria, the two generating units at the Kozloduy NPP continue to operate at their scheduled capacity despite the river’s record-low water levels. The plant has said that a dedicated task force was set up in early July to manage the situation and is implementing a contingency plan outlining the necessary measures in the event of a prolonged decline in the river’s water level.
