Bulgaria’s Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works will host the 15th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) on November 3 and 4. The forum is the main event of Bulgaria’s 2026 EUSDR Presidency.
In 2026, Bulgaria holds the rotating presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, which brings together 14 countries to cooperate on common challenges and opportunities in the region. Bulgaria’s presidency is being conducted under the motto “Bridging Regions, Building Cohesion: A Stronger Danube for All,” with a focus on reducing economic, social and territorial disparities and making better use of macro-regional cooperation to promote balanced development across the Danube Region.
The priorities Bulgaria is working on during the year include improving transport and economic connectivity, better linking the Danube Strategy with future EU policies and funding after 2027, supporting the integration of EU candidate countries, developing the potential of small and medium-sized cities, and strengthening links between the Danube and Black Sea regions.
In July, Bulgaria presented guidelines in Brussels for better aligning the Danube Strategy’s priorities with the EU’s future budget for 2028-2034, including specific thematic areas in which the needs of the Danube Region could be reflected in future European policies and instruments. In Ruse, the presidency also focused on links between the Danube and Black Sea regions, with an emphasis on connectivity and opportunities for closer regional cooperation.
High-level representatives of the European Union, national governments, regional and local authorities, civil society, academia, young people and other stakeholders will discuss how cooperation under the Danube Strategy can contribute more effectively to the region’s cohesion and development.
The forum programme includes discussions on transport and multimodal connectivity, skills and local economies, water management and climate resilience, security, and the role of small and medium-sized cities in balanced territorial development. Particular emphasis will be placed on the future of cohesion policy after 2027 and the role of macro-regional strategies in the EU’s future policies and financial instruments.
On November 3, a meeting of the Danube Region ministers responsible for regional development will be held before the official opening of the Annual Forum.
The 15th EUSDR Annual Forum is supported under the DSP 3 Danube Strategy Point – A Secretariat for the Danube Region project, co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg Danube Region Programme 2021-2027.
