Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova described Shipka Peak as a symbol of sacrifice, dignity, and the unity of all Bulgarians during the official commemoration of the 149th anniversary of the Battle of Shipkac at Shipka Peak.
The president recalled the Battle of Shipka’s key role in determining the outcome of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and paid tribute to the Bulgarian volunteer fighters and Russian soldiers who took part in the battles for the pass.
According to the president, the most important message left by the heroes of Shipka is unity. “And the most important part of this legacy is unity. It alone is the strongest force. The unity of all Bulgarians,” Iotova said, adding, “because freedom can only be preserved when we are all together.”
The president said that today Shipka represents “a duty of the living,” and that those who hold positions of responsibility in the state must understand the price of freedom and bear their responsibility toward the state and the people.
“They must know what a state is. They must know how to protect it, and not simply make promises, but understand the pain of our people and be worthy of meeting their expectations,” Iliana Iotova said.
She stressed that the heroes of Shipka left behind not a legacy of division, but one of unity, dedication, and faith in the people.
At the end of her speech, the president called for tribute to be paid to the thousands of heroes who gave their lives for Bulgaria’s freedom.
In the decisive three-day Battle of Shipka, 5,500 Russian soldiers and Bulgarians of the Volunteer Corps under the command of General Nikolai Stoletov defended the Central Balkan Range pass against 35,000 Turks under Suleyman Pasha, driving northward to relieve the besieged Osman Pasha at Pleven. The fiercest engagements took place between 3 and 10 p.m. on August 9 (New Style August 21) and especially after 10 a.m. on August 10, when the defenders, having run out of ammunition, started pelting the Turks with stones, trees and corpses, beating back enemy attacks from the peaks of Sveti Nikola, Shipka and Orlovo Gnezdo. At that point, the Turks tried to turn the position, but a 200-men reinforcement under General Fyodor Radetzky rode in tandem to the rescue from Gabrovo. Suleyman’s force withdrew on August 11, having lost 10,000 men in five days. A total of 3,348 Russians and Bulgarians were killed in the Battle of Shipka.
