Balgarianovinite.com Balkanik Festival, one of the largest festivals in Southeastern Europe, was held in Bucharest between August 28 and 30, highlighting the music and values of the Balkans.
Bulgarian musician Nikola Gruev, better known by his stage name Kottarashky, performed alongside multi-instrumentalist Sando Sandov on the first day of the event. The audience also had the opportunity to hear and see popular groups from Turkiye, Serbia, Poland, Armenia, France, Moldova and Romania, as well as music inspired by the traditions of Iraq and Yemen.
In addition to music, the 13th Balkanik Festival offered visitors contemporary art, video mapping, discussions, workshops and relaxation areas. At the craft market, people could watch local artisans demonstrate authentic techniques for working with wood, leather and ceramics, and buy handmade souvenirs made from textiles or glass. The food area gave visitors the opportunity to enjoy coffee brewed in hot sand and sample Balkan food.
This year’s event was held in Tei Park, situated on the shores of the lake of the same name in northern Bucharest, next to a huge Ferris wheel that rises 63 metres into the air. Before the area was urbanized in the 20th century, it belonged to the prominent noble Ghica family. Vast vineyards and an extensive natural garden known as the “Linden Garden” once stretched across the area. The name of the park and the neighbourhood comes from the Romanian word for linden tree, “tei”, as the fragrance of the flowering linden trees would fill the entire area during the summer.
