Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian Social Democracy – EuroLeft leader Alexander Tomov will run for president in the October 25 election, the party’s press office said on Monday.
Tomov, born in Sofia in 1954, is an academic and politician. He studied at the University of National and World Economy and St Petersburg State University in the 1970s. He was elected to the Seventh Grand National Assembly in 1990 and later served as deputy prime minister in the government of Dimitar Popov, formed after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. He also served in the 36th and 38th National Assemblies.
In 1993, he founded the Civic Union for the Republic, which became the Bulgarian Euro-Left in 1997. Tomov initiated and co-founded the party and has repeatedly been re-elected as its chair.
According to the party, Tomov helped draft dozens of pieces of legislation, mainly in the economic sphere, and contributed to Bulgaria’s new Constitution. Over the past three decades, he has published 14 monographs and more than 150 other works on the achievements and failures of Bulgaria’s transition and on global developments.
Tomov said he had accepted a proposal from a large group of Bulgarian academics, public figures and representatives of the cultural and sports sectors.
“I want to restore the Bulgarian president’s rightful authority as the bearer of the country’s strategic vision, the guarantor and embodiment of national unity, the country’s representative in international relations and commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces,” he said.
He said his programme centred on accelerating economic growth and raising Bulgarian incomes above the European average, which he argued would halt the country’s demographic decline and prevent it from “disappearing as a nation”.
Tomov said he opposed curtailing the president’s powers or making the office dependent on party leaders, calling this “a gross violation of the country’s fundamental law”.
He also objected to attempts to turn the election into a one-candidate race and avoid debate and a clash of ideas, saying this would demotivate citizens and deprive them of their democratic rights.
“Achieving national consensus has been and remains the main goal of my political life. My experience now allows me to propose radically new solutions to unite the Bulgarian nation around the major goals ahead,” he said.
In July, Parliament set October 25 as the date for the presidential and vice-presidential election. The decision was published in the State Gazette. On August 13, the Central Election Commission adopted the election timeline. On August 19, the Council of Ministers adopted a decision on preparations and conduct of the election.
