Balgarianovinite.com Thousands of students and citizens took part in protests across Serbia on Tuesday to mark 22 months since the collapse of the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and left one person seriously injured.
The protesters gathered in Belgrade near the old railway station and marched in long columns along a pre-announced route, ending with a 16-minute silence in tribute to the victims.
“We are appealing to everyone. The truth about what actually happened and who is responsible for the tragedy in Novi Sad must come to light. This is a matter of accountability to society. And this issue concerns not only those in power but all of us,” said Andrej Popovic, a student at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Law.
He added that the students are conducting their campaign on the ground, setting up information stands and organizing charity events, as well as campaigning on social media.
Groups of protesters also took to the streets in Novi Sad on Tuesday evening.
A 16-minute silence was also observed in Nis, under the message “It is still 11:52” — the time when the concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station collapsed.
The student movement that led the anti-government protests that erupted immediately after the Novi Sad tragedy announced that the struggle would continue.
In May 2025, the students for the first time called for snap parliamentary elections and said they would support a list of parliamentary candidates who have public credibility and have not previously been involved in the country’s political life.
Last November, Dijana Hrka, the mother of one of those killed beneath the rubble of the Novi Sad railway station, went on hunger strike in an unsuccessful attempt to pressure Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to set a date for snap elections.
In late June, Vucic said that he would remain president for only a few more weeks before resigning, and that after stepping down he would set a date for parliamentary elections.
