Balgarianovinite.com Interviewed by Nova TV on Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov said VAT for the tourism sector will not be reduced. In his words, this is the right decision because the sector has received considerable concessions.
“After the COVID years, they were given assistance, and what did they do? In 2026, when Bulgaria introduced the euro, they took advantage of it in the worst possible way, citing the war and the euro [as justification],” the Deputy Prime Minister said. He added that they had not incurred additional costs that would justify raising prices.
Pekanov identified the services sector as the second sector with the largest price increases in July and August. He said Bulgarian traders had not acted properly because they had taken advantage of the country’s entry into the euro area and raised prices in a way that disadvantaged Bulgarians.
“It is not normal for restaurants in Italy, Austria and Spain to have prices that are, in part, the same as in Bulgaria,” Pekanov said. He does not consider it normal to see more or less similar prices in a restaurant in Sofia and in Vienna. “The sector is putting its overall performance at long-term risk,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. With these decisions, the tourism sector has put the economy at risk and should cut prices in nominal terms for the next season, he said.
Asked whether he still considered the introduction of the euro to be the right decision, Pekanov said that in the long term, this was the right process. “But it did not happen in the right way, especially in terms of prices; it was carried out in the worst possible way, and this is not good,” he said.
According to Pekanov, the situation with inflation and prices in Bulgaria is alarming: “It is no coincidence that this was one of the first issues the government tackled from the outset.” He said, however, that the situation remains difficult. Annual inflation is rising again and stood at 5.1% in August [according to Eurostat]. Transport prices are increasing, mainly due to oil prices, over which the government does not have full control, Pekanov said, adding that the Cabinet would intervene where it can through soft measures.
Official statistics show that food prices have fallen since May, the Deputy Prime Minister said, recalling that following talks with supermarkets, they had agreed to reduce some prices. Pekanov said that the Care Basket initiative was having an effect.
He recalled that regulatory changes had been made and said that over the years he had repeatedly criticized the Commission for Consumer Protection and the Commission for Protection of Competition for not doing enough. Measures will be taken to strengthen quality controls and regulations, and institutions that have failed to do their job would need to undergo changes, he said.
As regards the 2027 budget, Pekanov said that throughout September, the Finance Ministry would meet with all ministries.
