Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) accused President Donald Trump of putting Republicans in an untenable position ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Trump’s approval rating is well underwater in every reputable poll. One UMass survey from last month shows his approval rating at just 32%. In another poll, Democrats lead Republicans in a generic congressional ballot 51% to 43%. The GOP, which narrowly controls the House, is widely expected to lose the lower chamber and possibly the Senate.
Massie has been critical of Trump, particularly on the president’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and the Iran war. On Tuesday, the lawmaker blindsided Republican leadership by introducing articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. In response, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) sent the House into early recess rather than put the articles up for a vote.
Massie spoke with reporters at the Capitol, where he suggested the 2026 midterms will mirror the 2006 edition, when Republicans lost their majorities in the House and Senate amid the Iraq war. The congressman noted that then-President George W. Bush responded by firing Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
“Do you think that’s the analogy here, that this year the fundamentals are shaping up like that 2006 bloodbath election?” a reporter asked in video recorded by reporter Pablo Manríquez of MeidasTouch.
“The thing that is the same is that there’s an unpopular war raging and Congress is not doing anything to rein it in,” Massie replied. “And so there are gonna be a lot of incumbents lose their race.”
Massie then said Trump is “doing everything he can” to make life difficult for Republicans at the polls.
“And even if it’s the war that they dislike so much, it’s the consequences of war, which is the price of diesel and gasoline,” he added. “And so it’s a big issue. I mean, this was Donald Trump’s election to lose, and he’s doing everything he can to lose it”
Massie lost his Republican primary this year to Ed Gallrein, whom Trump endorsed.
