The New York Post’s Miranda Devine pressed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on whether Americans who backed President Donald Trump feel “betrayed” by his decision to go to war with Iran.
Devine, a supporter of the president who interviewed him in June, questioned Cruz on the matter during a Wednesday episode of her podcast, Pod Force One.
“I’m spending every waking moment crisscrossing the state, fighting to hold onto the House and Senate,” Cruz said of the upcoming midterm elections.
“How do you feel?” Devine asked. “What’s the mood out there?”
“I’m worried,” the Texas Republican admitted. “The mood is rough. Um, it is a challenging environment.”
“Do people feel that they’ve been betrayed by President Trump because of the Iran war?” the host questioned.
“No,” Cruz responded. “No. That’s actually a very online Twitter phenomenon. There are not a whole lot of real people who believe that. Look, Tucker Carlson is a quack, and the people who follow him are a fringe.”
Carlson, a former ally of Trump’s, has been outspoken against the war, branding the president “weak” in July for letting Israel force him into the conflict.
In August, though, CNN data guru Harry Enten highlighted polling that suggested discontent over the war extended well beyond what Cruz characterized as an online “fringe.”
Just 41% of Republicans surveyed said they believed the U.S. would ultimately reach a good deal with Iran — a figure Enten described as particularly striking coming from within Trump’s own party.
Enten also pointed to a steep decline among highly motivated voters: 53% said in July 2024 that they were confident Trump could handle Iran, compared with just 29% who approved of his handling of the matter two years later.
Trump, on Saturday, assured Americans that the conflict will turn out “fine and dandy.”
