The initiative “This Is Bulgaria: In the Footsteps of Ivan Vazov” will be held on September 22 at the summer stage in Gara Bov, in Western Bulgaria’s Iskar Gorge. The initiative was presented during a BTA-hosted news conference in Sofia on Monday as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Bulgarian Association of Journalists and Writers in Tourism (BAJWT).
Dedicated to the legacy of renowned Bulgarian writer and journalist Ivan Vazov, the event will mark his 105th death anniversary and showcase the rich cultural and literary heritage of the Iskar Gorge, with more than 250 children expected to take part in a concert, literary trail and recitation competition. The literary route will follow the Vazov Trail and feature 20 landmarks in Svoge Municipality associated with the writer.
Local officials noted that the initiative aims to promote the Iskar Gorge as a destination where literature, journalism and tourism intersect, while preserving cultural heritage and engaging younger generations. Project coordinator Antoaneta Tityanova said Gara Bov was chosen because of Vazov’s connection to the area and the landscapes that inspired his work. Vazov also played a role in the development of tourism in Bulgaria, serving as the first chairman of the Bulgarian Tourist Union, she recalled.
The news conference also highlighted BAJWT’s 70-year history and its membership in the World Federation of Journalists and Writers in Tourism. The association brings together journalists from print, radio, television and digital media and continues to support the promotion of Bulgarian tourism and cultural heritage.
