Nearly 800 Kg of Non-Compliant Food Destroyed – Food Safety Agency

Inspectors from the Regional Food Safety Directorates across the country carried out 2,273 inspections of food production, retail and catering establishments between September 11 and 17, 2026, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) said. More than 750 kg of food of animal origin was destroyed due to the lack of an identification mark and expired shelf life. Another 40 kg of food of non-animal origin was destroyed because it was not accompanied by documents certifying its origin or had expired.
A total of 109 notices and 23 written statements ascertaining administrative violations were issued. The operations of three establishments were suspended for operating without registration under the Food Act and for unsatisfactory hygienic conditions.
Of the total inspections, 1,326 were carried out as part of planned inspections, 124 in response to alerts and complaints, and 413 as part of thematic inspections. Inspectors also carried out 195 inspections of kitchens at nurseries, kindergartens and children’s milk kitchens, as well as 215 inspections related to registrations under the Food Act.
The violations identified mainly involved the offering of food past its expiry date, missing labelling or documents certifying origin, improper storage, and deficiencies in traceability. Non-compliance was also found in the hygienic condition of establishments, their buildings, material and technical facilities and technological equipment, as well as cases of operating without the required registration and incomplete record-keeping under food safety management systems.
