Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders gave the media the silent treatment in response to days of controversy from the last time he spoke publicly.

Last week, Sanders caused a stir in the sports world when he expressed his belief that he’s good enough to be a starting quarterback in the league. The rookie QB added that “if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that.”

At the time of writing, Sanders was third on the Browns’ depth chart — behind starting QB Dillon Gabriel and backup Joe Flacco. Because of that, he faced a wave of criticism over the remarks.

Some of the harshest criticism came from former NFL coach Rex Ryan, who called Sanders an “embarrassment” on ESPN. Sanders’ mother later took to social media to call the coach’s comments “cancerous.”

Perhaps looking to avoid more controversy, Sanders on Wednesday took a much different approach to his time with the media. While fielding questions, the 23-year-old moved his mouth without any words coming out. As noted by Sports Illustrated reporter Spencer German, Sanders simply pantomimed throughout his entire media availability.

While “answering” the questions, Sanders had a big smile on his face — clearly amused by the absurdity of the situation. Off-screen, a teammate could be heard advising the media not to waste their time.
