The Foreign Ministry summoned North Macedonia’s charge d’affaires in Sofia over the refusal to admit MP Angel Georgiev into North Macedonia, the ministry press service said on Tuesday.
Georgiev chairs the parliamentary Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad. According to the Ministry, he was refused entry on September 27 while travelling as a member of a Bulgarian parliamentary delegation to attend the following day’s hearing in Kocani in the case against Bulgarian citizen Iva Mihaylova.
The Bulgarian side asked why Skopje had taken this step now, given that Georgiev had entered North Macedonia without difficulty in previous months for the same purpose, the Ministry said. It described the approach as provocative.
On Monday, Georgiev, a Vazrazhdane MP, wrote on Facebook that he had been refused entry and could not attend Mihaylova’s hearing.
Georgiev said he had been told the reason was unpaid court costs related to a case. He was travelling with fellow Vazrazhdane MP Krastyo Vrachev and said he would ask Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry to raise the matter with EU institutions and North Macedonia’s authorities. Monday’s hearing lasted more than ten hours; the next is scheduled for November 9.
