Bulgaria needs a law regulating certified translations, Marianna Hill, chair of the Management Board of the Association of Interpreters and Translators in Bulgaria, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
The event, held at the Bulgarian News Agency’s National Press Club to mark the association’s 30th anniversary, focused on the lack of rules defining the qualifications, responsibilities and rights of translators of official documents. Hill said the association was working towards legislation that would set such rules and help ensure the quality of translation services.
In 2019, a five-member panel of the Supreme Administrative Court upheld a ruling that struck down provisions governing a list of translators maintained by the Foreign Ministry. The provisions were part of a regulation adopted in 1958. Following the ruling, the Ministry stopped maintaining the list and introduced temporary rules for certifying translations.
Hill introduced three guests at the press conference: Catia Lattanzi, president of the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA); Liese Katschinka, a former EULITA president; and Fedde Dijkstra, chair of the Netherlands’ Order of Registered Interpreters and Translators. She thanked BTA Deputy Director-General Evgenia Drumeva for hosting the event and expressed hope for closer cooperation with BTA.
