A pair of Ed Sheeran shows at Gillette Stadium this weekend have been canceled weeks after the singer-songwriter’s tour came under intense scrutiny over comments by rapper Macklemore.
But the cancellations had nothing to do with the controversy, as the shows slated for Friday and Saturday night at the home of the New England Patriots in Massachusetts, were nixed over an approaching nor’easter, TMZ reported on Friday.
The storm is predicted to whip through New England on Friday night while packing quite a punch from Mother Nature, including devastating winds and punishing rain, according to Accuweather.com.
The tour became the subject of controversy earlier this month when Macklemore, one of Sheeran’s opening acts, told a MetLife Stadium crowd, “A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine. I said, Free Palestine!”
The remarks caught the attention of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who said he wouldn’t allow Sheeran to perform in Foxborough if Macklemore came with him.
As a result, Macklemore was removed from the tour.
Days later, Finneas, Irish singer Aaron Rowe, Irish band Beoga, and Danish band Lukas Graham pulled out of the remaining stadium tour dates, leaving Sheeran without any opening acts.
