Presidential candidate and Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov said that, above all, Bulgaria’s president should be Bulgarian, put the national interest first and look exclusively after the interests of Bulgarian citizens. He made the remarks at an election campaign meeting with supporters in Aksakovo, Varna Region.
Kostadinov said his party was taking an unconventional approach to the campaign this time, holding outdoor events rather than meetings in halls, with the aim of engaging not only supporters but also passers-by.
He said the election could produce a surprise, including for Europe, provided Bulgarian voters chose an alternative to oligarchic political formations which, in his view, lacked independent will and were interested only in redistributing public resources.
Despite the large number of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Kostadinov argued that there were effectively only three tickets. He said two represented the status quo, while Vazrazhdane offered an alternative and a different choice.
He stressed that the party’s main objective was to convince Bulgarians that the outcome had not been decided in advance and that high voter turnout was essential.
Commenting on the killing of a businessman in Plovdiv, Kostadinov described the incident as a grim return to the era of Bulgaria’s organised-crime groups of the 1990s.
He claimed that changes in political power were accompanied by changes in the channels used to redistribute illicit gains, adding that major political shifts were often followed by high-profile murders. In his view, further such killings could occur.
