Presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said in Kardzhali, Southern Bulgaria, that it remains unclear where the threat, if any, originated, referring to Tuesday’s drone attacks on two ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
He commented on the need to immediately clarify all facts and circumstances surrounding the incident and the measures to be taken, and to communicate all of this clearly to Bulgarian citizens. Gurov identified the convening of the Consultative Council on National Security as the best course of action, noting that it would provide a forum to discuss potential consultations with NATO partners under Article 4.
Addressing the residents of Kardzhali, Gurov spoke on both local and national issues. He highlighted the problem of the city lacking a ring road or a motorway, which leads to heavy traffic and congestion. Gurov also touched upon the subject of public procurement and the need for transparency.
“It is not just a matter of stolen money. It means a road isn’t built on time, the pavement is poor, and honest, legitimate businesses cannot secure contracts; meanwhile, we all know where these contracts go, at what prices, and what the actual outcome is once the work is done,” the presidential candidate remarked.
The candidate described the role of the presidency not as one that merely waits for bad decisions in order to exercise a veto, but as a proactive one, adding that his team’s goal is to bring key issues to the forefront of public attention. Gurov recalled the caretaker government’s economic achievements and summarized that Bulgaria is not just Sofia, and that the regions are the country’s “backbone.”
