Bulgaria remained among the EU countries with the lowest unemployment in August, with a rate of 3.5%, unchanged from the previous month, according to Eurostat data, published on Thursday. This placed Bulgaria fifth among EU Member States and second among euro area countries with the lowest unemployment.
Year on year, Bulgaria’s unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points from 3.7% in August 2025.
Lower rates were recorded in Czechia, at 3.2%, and Malta, Poland and Slovenia, all at 3.4%. The highest unemployment rates were registered in Finland, at 10.3%, Spain, at 10%, and Sweden, at 8.7%.
Eurostat estimates that 106,000 people were unemployed in Bulgaria in August, down by 1,000 from July and by 7,000 from 113,000 in August 2025.
In the euro area, the unemployment rate remained unchanged month on month at 6.4%, but increased by 0.1 percentage points from 6.3% in August 2025.
Across the EU, unemployment also remained unchanged from July, at 6.1%, compared with 6% a year earlier.
An estimated 13.6 million people were unemployed in the EU in August, including 11.357 million in the euro area. Compared with July, the number of unemployed people decreased by 12,000 in the EU and by 26,000 in the euro area. Year on year, however, unemployment increased by 348,000 people in the EU and by 267,000 in the euro area.
Youth Unemployment Falls in Bulgaria
The unemployment rate among people under 25 in Bulgaria fell to 13.5% in August from 13.9% in July. It was also down by one percentage point year on year, from 14.5% in August 2025.
Across the EU, youth unemployment edged up to 15.4% from 15.3% in July, while in the euro area it declined to 15% from 15.1%.
A total of 2.973 million people under 25 were unemployed in the EU in August, including 2.391 million in the euro area. Compared with July, their number increased by 13,000 in the EU and decreased by 9,000 in the euro area. Year on year, the number increased by 19,000 in the EU and by 38,000 in the euro area.
Unemployment by Sex
The unemployment rate among women in Bulgaria stood at 3.1% in August, up from 3% in July but down from 3.5% a year earlier.
Among men, the rate fell to 3.9% from 4% in July and was unchanged from August 2025.
Across the EU, unemployment stood at 6.4% among women and 5.9% among men. The corresponding rates in the euro area were 6.7% and 6.2%.
