Sofia Zoo will hold an educational programme on October 4 to mark World Animal Day and Zookeepers’ Day, featuring demonstration feedings of various animal species and talks by zookeepers. The initiative will take place from 11:00 to 16:00, the zoo said on Thursday.
The programme will begin at 11:00 with a demonstration feeding of the white rhinoceros in the outdoor enclosure at the Giants Hall. The Asian elephants will be fed at 11:30, followed by the tufted capuchins at noon. Demonstration feedings of black-and-white colobus monkeys will take place at 12:30, followed by the Eurasian brown bear at 13:00.
From 14:00, visitors will be able to watch the feeding of Eurasian lynxes, at 14:30 the griffon and cinereous vultures, at 15:00 the American alligator, at 15:30 the black jaguars, and at 16:00 the Bengal tiger.
From 14:00 to 16:00, an interactive information stand will be set up in front of the Environmental Science and Education Centre. Visitors will be able to learn more about the zoo’s educational and conservation activities, while children will be able to take part in educational games featuring puzzles and prizes and examine natural artefacts.
The initiative aims to highlight the modern role of zoos as centres for biodiversity conservation, the breeding of endangered species and environmental education, Sofia Zoo said.
The zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals representing 220 species, 51 of which are globally threatened with extinction. Sofia Zoo participates in conservation programmes run by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
“Modern zoos have long ceased to be simply places of entertainment and have become key conservation and scientific centres. Our mission is to change people’s attitude towards nature,” said Dr Katerina Zareva-Simeonova, head of the Environmental Science and Education Centre at Sofia Zoo.
The event is being organised in partnership with the volunteer team Zoos Ambassadors as part of the “Discover Sofia’s Wild Heart” project. The project is among the initiatives funded in this year’s edition of Lidl Bulgaria’s internal “#teamlidl: The Cause Is Worth It” programme, which promotes volunteering and employee engagement with social causes.
As part of the project, volunteer activities to improve the zoo environment are planned over the coming weeks, along with the provision of specialised toys and feeding devices for the animals. These are intended to stimulate their natural instincts to play, explore and forage, while supporting their physical and psychological well-being.
The project has so far also funded a specialised academy for zookeepers aimed at enhancing their skills in interpretive presentation, as well as the purchase of technical equipment.
The eighth edition of the charity “Run for the Animals” will also take place on October 4. The 5-kilometre race will start at 11:00 near Lake Ariana in Borisova Garden, while registration and the collection of race numbers will begin at 10:00.
