Representatives of Bulgarian organisations in the Republic of North Macedonia attended a meeting of the National Assembly’s Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad on Thursday, at the invitation of its Chair, Angel Georgiev. The meeting focused on a proposal to include Bulgarians in North Macedonia’s Constitution with delayed effect.
During the meeting, the representatives signed a joint declaration protesting the proposal. The organisations were invited to submit their own suggestions to the committee regarding the wording of the constitutional provision.
Georgiev said that clear commitments and agreements had already been established in connection with North Macedonia’s EU accession process. He added that Bulgarians in the country needed support.
MP Elisaveta Belobradova stressed that neither her personal position nor that of her colleagues on North Macedonia’s accession to the European Union had changed. She said, however, that the political situation in North Macedonia was having a particularly severe impact on the Bulgarian community. She reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to defending the interests of Bulgarians in the country.
Zoran Murseski, an ethnic Bulgarian from North Macedonia and chair of the Yug Association of Bulgarians in Prilep, said an attempt had been made to establish a Bulgarian media outlet in the country, but its equipment had been confiscated and the outlet had been shut down.
Lyubcho Yoshevski from Bitola described what he said was unequal treatment in the workplace. While his colleagues could simply call their employers to say they would be unable to come to work on a particular day, he said he had been explicitly warned that he must give two days’ notice if he could not attend work.
Viktor Stoyanov, Chair of the Macedonia Foundation, put forward proposals to the committee, arguing that Bulgarians in North Macedonia were subjected to pressure and individual persecution. He called on civil society organisations in both Bulgaria and North Macedonia to submit evidence of cases involving the persecution of Bulgarians to the committee on a daily basis.
Georgiev announced that he would initiate a process to turn the declaration signed by the representatives of Bulgarian organisations into a declaration of the National Assembly.
The committee said that, while preparations for the meeting were underway, many of those invited had expressed concerns about attending because they feared possible pressure upon returning to North Macedonia.
Georgiev said he would personally monitor the participants’ ability to travel without obstruction and would promptly notify the Foreign Ministry and the Bulgarian ambassador of any instances of repression, intimidation or restrictions on freedom of movement.
