Parliament’s Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad on Thursday heard Foreign Ministry representatives over North Macedonia’s refusal to allow Committee Chair and Vazrazhdane MP Angel Georgiev to enter the country o September 27.
Georgiev was travelling to North Macedonia as part of a Bulgarian parliamentary delegation to attend a hearing in Kocani in the case against Iva Mihaylova, a dual Bulgarian and North Macedonian citizen who has been prevented from leaving the country for medical treatment.
Yordan Parvanov, Director General for European Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, told the committee that North Macedonia’s chargé d’affaires in Sofia had been asked to provide an explanation for the decision to deny Georgiev entry. The Foreign Ministry had noted that Georgiev had entered North Macedonia without obstruction in previous months for the same purpose.
“The Bulgarian side clearly stated that it regards this approach as provocative,” Parvanov said.
Momchil Raychevski, Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Southeast Europe Directorate, said the same position had been conveyed during the meeting with North Macedonia’s diplomatic representative and that Sofia was awaiting an explanation from the authorities in Skopje.
Georgiev was reportedly denied entry because of unpaid court costs stemming from an earlier case related to a visit he made to the historic Kaimakchalan site. Georgiev said he had not been informed that proceedings had been brought against him and did not know what the case concerned.
He argued that the situation could potentially affect other Bulgarian MPs who might similarly discover that proceedings had been conducted against them without their knowledge.
Georgiev said he had taken steps to appeal the refusal to allow him into North Macedonia.
Mihaylova is standing trial in Kocani over a road accident in October 2025 in which one person died and several people, including Mihaylova herself, were injured. Her identity documents were seized after the accident, preventing her from travelling to Bulgaria for treatment of spinal injuries. Bulgarian MPs from several parliamentary groups have attended hearings in the case.
