Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Penakov Friday said that he expects the 5th payment under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) – EUR 1.8 billion – by the end of December. The request was submitted on Thursday, and with that step Bulgaria completed the final administrative procedures with the European Commission regarding the payment, Pekanov explained during Question Time in Parliament.
The funds were at risk until recently, since some of the key reforms required for the payment had not been completed. According to Deputy Prime Minister Pekanov, the European Commission will assess the request for the payment within two months.
Pekanov highlighted the completed investments – the establishment of a new Anti-Corruption Commission, the delivery of new trains, STEM classrooms, completed nursing homes for the elderly and people with disabilities, stroke centres, the renovation and modernization of some psychiatric clinics, and the adoption of legislative changes. There was a risk of losing over half a billion euro, Pekanov added.
Bulgaria is currently in active discussions with the European Commission regarding the next programming period, Pekanov also said.
