Works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude never before shown in Bulgaria will be presented by DG Art Gallery at the third edition of Sofia Art Fair, to be held from October 8 to 11 at Sofia Tech Park, the gallery said on Friday. The selection includes lithographs, signed editions, collages and preparatory studies related to some of the best-known projects of the artistic duo.
Among them is a collage related to The Mastaba project, as well as a lithograph from its London realization, issued in an edition of 20. Signed lithographs from The Gates in Central Park in New York and The Umbrellas in Japan and the United States will also be presented.
The works also include a piece related to Wrapped Portrait of Jeanne-Claude from 1963. The original is a portrait of Jeanne-Claude painted by Christo in oils on canvas and signed with his surname, Javacheff. The artist subsequently wrapped the painting in transparent polyethylene and rope and signed it as Christo. The work is now part of the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
Preparatory studies also trace the work on three of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s realised urban projects – the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont Neuf and the Arc de Triomphe Wrapped in Paris.
“For me, the choice of Christo and Jeanne-Claude is very personal and special. On the one hand, they are an integral part of the history of world art, which I have been working with for more than 15 years. On the other, Christo is a symbol of how Bulgarian roots and genius can reach the highest global heights. It is precisely this synergy between Bulgaria and the global art scene that we want to showcase at Sofia Art Fair,” said Denitsa Gergova, founder and artistic director of DG Art Gallery.
The participation in Sofia Art Fair is DG Art Gallery’s first presentation following the transformation of Vivacom Art Hall Oborishte 5.
The works on display span nearly six decades of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artistic careers, from 1963 to 2021. Projects from this period include the wrapping of the Pont Neuf in 1985 and the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin ten years later. The latest project was realised in Paris a year after Christo’s death under the direction of his nephew, Vladimir Yavachev.
