The Liberty Memorial on Shipka Peak will look exactly the same after the renovation, which is why there are 1,000 pages of publicly available documentation, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said on Friday during parliamentary question time in response to a question from the Vazrazhdane parliamentary group about the renovation of the monument.
Vazrazhdane has consistently criticized the scale of the Shipka repairs, arguing that they are excessive and not warranted by the condition of the monument. The party has also warned that the contractor lacks the capacity required to carry out the work.
“The monument will be restored to exactly the same appearance,” Radev said. He said previous governments had left the renovation to their successors, which had resulted in the monument becoming unsafe, with stones falling from it, while moisture inside was damaging the exhibition. “We decided to take this risk so that future generations can have this monument,” the Prime Minister said.
He stressed that the Shipka monument was a sacred site and a symbol of the entire Bulgarian people, not just of Vazrazhdane. “If you really cared about this monument, you would also be concerned about its condition,” he said.
Radev recalled that the monument had been repaired as early as its first year after construction, after it was found that the weather conditions were extremely harsh, with moisture, water penetration and problems with joints. Care for the monument had begun at that time, he said.
“By 2020, stones weighing a considerable amount had already started falling, making the monument dangerous,” Radev said. He pointed out that the steps on the northern side of the entrance were shifting because underneath them was only earth and stones, with no proper foundation.
“What you call gutting is the careful removal of all the stair and cladding slabs, which have been sorted, numbered and stored,” the Prime Minister said. According to Radev, once a solid foundation has been built underneath, the slabs will be put back in place.
Prime Minister Radev stressed that the project for the Shipka monument was not initiated by the current government but dated back three years. He said he had ordered the restoration process to be accelerated as much as possible in accordance with the prepared documentation.
“There will be a reinforced concrete foundation underneath, while the steps above will look exactly the same,” the prime minister said.
Work under the project for the conservation and restoration of the Liberty Memorial on Shipka Peak is under way and proceeding according to plan, Dr Chavdar Angelov, director of the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park-Museum, told BTA on Thursday. The construction and installation works are due to be completed within 642 calendar days. Given the extreme weather conditions typical of the Shipka Pass area, the works are scheduled to take place between 1 April and 31 October over three consecutive calendar years.
