Prime Minister Rumen Radev said tourism is now a vital part of Bulgaria’s economy and an important gateway for investment, including serious investment by people who come with substantial resources and a genuine desire to stay and develop the tourism industry. Radev welcomed participants in a meeting of the senior management of TUI Group, held at Golden Sands near Varna on Friday.
Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov, Varna Regional Governor Mario Smarkov and Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev also attended.
“I believe tourism is the future,” Radev said and joked that, because of artificial intelligence, everyone would soon be unemployed and have the opportunity to travel and enjoy themselves.
Germany is Bulgaria’s strategic and leading economic partner in investment and innovation, Radev said. Tourism is not just about entertainment and discovering new places, but is an important part of the economy, he added.
“If we want to keep people in Bulgaria, we need a strong tourism industry,” the Prime Minister said. He noted that one of Bulgaria’s major advantages is its ability to offer an exceptionally diverse range of tourism products within a small territory. The country has a coastline, mountains and ski resorts, as well as opportunities for rural, cultural, religious and cruise tourism, while its archaeological sites are comparable to those in Italy and Greece, Radev said. He also highlighted Bulgaria’s historical heritage.
What Bulgaria lacks is infrastructure and a developed entertainment industry around historical sites, Radev said. There is also a need to tell stories about the sites, which he described as an excellent way of attracting visitors.
Events such as the TUI Group senior management meeting strengthen relations and provide opportunities for personal contact, which people increasingly lack, Radev said.
